Jefferson, Former Gator Kerron Clement Combine for Three Medals at Pan American Games
Sunday, July 26, 2015 | Track and Field
TORONTO – Rising senior Kyra Jefferson and former Gator standout Kerron Clement each competed in a pair of events at the Pan American Games this past week, winning three of the United States' 41 medals from the track & field portion of the international competition.
After posting the third-fastest overall time (22.65) in the 200m semifinals, Jefferson clocked a 22.72 in the finals, claiming the silver medal. The following day, Jefferson ran the second leg for the United States' 4x400 relay team, which won the gold medal with a time of 3:25.68, just under a full two seconds faster than Jamaica, the silver medalists.
Clement helped the United States collect a silver medal in the men's 4x400 relay with a fantastic anchor leg. The Americans were in fourth place when Clement took the baton, but they ended the race as the bronze medalists. Following the race, Cuba, the original silver medalists, were disqualified, allowing the United States to take home silver medals.
Rising junior Andres Arroyo and former Gators Cory McGee and Eddie Lovett also represented their respective countries at the Pan American Games.
Donning a Puerto Rico uniform, Arroyo ran a 1:49.08 to take seventh place in the 800m final. Lovett, a United States Virgin Islander, ran a 13.65 in the 110mH preliminaries, narrowly missing out on one of the qualifying spots for the finals. In the 1,500m final, McGee posted a 4:11.12, just one second shy of securing a spot on the medal podium.
Overall, the United States won 13 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 13 bronze medals in track & field.
