GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The final rounds of singles and doubles at the Gainesville regional of the ITA Summer Circuit was full of Gators on the men's side. Sophomore Chase Perez-Blanco and redshirt sophomore Josh Wardell took the doubles title from fellow-Gator, Elliott Orkin and Georgia Tech's Cole Fiegel, 7-5.
Perez-Blanco and Orkin are also the finalists for the singles title, but the match will be played sometime on Tuesday. However, the match is not open to the public.
Both of the Gators had to defeat their freshman teammates to reach the final round. Orkin beat McClain Kessler, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, to advance to the finals round from the lower half of the bracket. Perez-Blanco advanced through to the final round with a victory over Alfredo Perez, 6-3, 6-4.
The ITA Summer Circuit provides college (and junior and alumni) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshmen and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, for NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of nine regional circuits-Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas, Northern California and Southern California-consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, all leading up to the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August.
