Florida Soccer drops 1-0 decision to Florida Gulf Coast in final exhibition match

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A single goal off a set piece gave Florida Gulf Coast a 1-0 win over Florida in the final preseason match for both teams Saturday evening at the Florida Soccer Practice Field.
The match was played in three periods with minutes of 30-30-30.
The only goal came in the final period. FGCU's Paige Law headed in a free kick from fellow junior Paulina Speckmaier in the 72nd minute.
During the course of the exhibition, 26 different Gators appeared Saturday. Florida turned in five shots Saturday while the Eagles turned in four.

“This was a step forward as far as some individual performances. As a team, we still have a ways to go before Friday. We need to see some progress and not make the same mistakes again over and over. I think that is some of what is happening.” – Becky Burleigh, Florida head coach

“Getting the freshmen to understand our tactical system and our style. It is very different than what most of them played coming in. With this big of a group it is important that they integrate into what we are doing.” – Becky Burleigh, Florida head coach

“They are really valuable. We knew we had a really new group, which is why we scheduled two. I think that has been very helpful for us.” – Becky Burleigh, Florida head coach
Preseason Conference Votes:
Florida – The Gators are picked to win the Southeastern Conference.
FGCU – The Eagles topped the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason vote to win the league.
Rankings:
Florida is ranked No. 8 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
Season Opener:
Gator soccer opens competition for the 2015-16 University of Florida athletic season at preseason No. 17 UCF on Friday, Aug. 21. Match time is set for 8 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando.
