BEIJING – Twelve former Florida track and field athletes will compete in 11 events at the 2015 IAAF World Championships, which will be held from Aug. 22-30 at National Stadium in Beijing.
Will Claye, Omar Craddock, Marquis Dendy, and Christian Taylor are vying to become the first quartet of fellow countrymen to qualify for the World Championships triple jump final. All four enter the event ranked fifth or higher in the world this year, with Taylor—the 2012 Olympics and 2011 World Championships gold medalist—leading the group at 18.06 meters (59' 3”), equal to the fourth-longest mark in history.
Dendy will leap in the long jump as well. He is currently the only man in the world ranked higher than 18th in both horizontal jumps, checking in at No. 3 in the long jump and No. 4 in the triple jump.
Four-time world champion Kerron Clement and four-time World Championships silver medalist Novlene Williams-Mills will both make their sixth appearance at the prestigious event, tying Dennis Mitchell for the most by a Gator. Clement will run the 400-meter hurdles, an event he won at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships. Williams-Mills will race in the 400 meters and the 4x400-meter relay for Jamaica.
Great Britain's long jump record holder Shara Proctor, ranked No. 3 in the world this year, is set to make her fifth World Championships appearance.
Tony McQuay will lace up his cleats as a member of the United States' 4x400-meter relay team. McQuay helped the Americans win their fifth consecutive 4x400 relay world title in 2013.
Genevieve LaCaze (3,000 meter steeplechase) and Keely Medeiros (shot put) will make their World Championships debuts for Australia and Brazil, respectively. Kemal Mesic (shot put) of Bosnia and United States Virgin Islander Eddie Lovett (110-meter hurdles) are making their second straight appearances.
