BEIJING – Four-time world champion and former Florida track and field star Kerron Clement turned in his best performance of the year, but missed out on a trip to the podium by one-hundredth of a second on day four of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
Racing in his fifth 400-meter hurdles final—the second-most in World Championships history—Clement crossed in a season-best 48.18 seconds, finishing just behind Jeffery Gibson of Bahamas (48.17) and Denis Kudryavtsev of Russia (48.05). Both Gibson's and Kudryavtsev's times broke their national records. Kenya's Nicholas Bett took the gold medal with a time of 47.79 seconds, the world's top mark for 2015.
In the 400 meters semifinals, Novlene Williams-Mills clocked a season-best time of 50.47 seconds to earn a spot in her fifth final, breaking a five-way tie for the most finals appearances in World Championships history.
A medal of any color for Williams-Mills, the 2007 bronze medalist in the 400 meters, would be the sixth of the Jamaican's World Championships career. Entering this year's World Championships, only 16 women boasted at least six medals. Among former Gators, only Dennis Mitchell has as many as Williams-Mills does heading into Thursday night's 400 meters final.
Wednesday morning's triple jump qualifying round—which begins Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET and will air live on Universal Sports—features former Gators Will Claye, Omar Craddock, Marquis Dendy, and Christian Taylor. The group is attempting to become the first quartet of fellow countrymen to reach the men's triple jump final.
