BEIJING – Former Florida track and field stars Omar Craddock and Christian Taylor both leapt to automatic qualifying marks in a star-studded men's triple jump field at the IAAF World Championships.
Taylor, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and 2011 world champion in this event, posted a mark of 17.28 meters (56' 8.5”)—which was the second-longest jump by any of the 28 competitors. Craddock, a two-time USATF Outdoor Championships triple jump gold medalist, jumped 17.01 meters (55' 9.75”), matching the fourth-best mark of the qualifying stage.
If Craddock and Taylor both go on to collect medals, they will become the fourth duo of fellow countrymen, third American twosome, and second pair of former Gators to medal in the World Championships men's triple jump.
Fellow former UF standouts Will Claye and Marquis Dendy were unable to reach the final. Dendy's top mark of 16.73 meters (54' 10.75”) left him just inches shy of 12th place and a spot in Thursday night's final. Claye, the 2011 and 2013 World Championships triple jump bronze medalist, recorded a leap of 16.41 meters (53' 10.25”).
Former Gator Eddie Lovett, representing the United States Virgin Islands, rounded out the night with a time of 13.65 seconds in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles. The last qualifying time for the semifinals was 13.61 seconds.
