Sunday, August 9, 2015 | Women's Golf
Three University of Florida women's golfers will compete in the 115th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the Portland Golf Club from Aug. 10-16. Junior Kelly Grassel, sophomore Taylor Tomlinson and freshman Sam Wagner will represent the Orange and Blue as part of a field of 156 golfers.
Tomlinson was the eighth qualifier at the Vero Beach Country Club on July 17, Wagner qualified as part of the Lexington, N.C., qualifier on July 21 and, a day later, Grassel was the sixth qualifier out of Northbrook, Ill., the final qualifying event.
UF Head Coach Emily Glaser, who was a semifinalist at the event in 2001, says, “It's really special to have three members of our team competing at the U.S. Amateur, arguably the biggest event for female amateurs in the United States. It's a great way for them to cap off a great summer of play before returning to school this fall. I know that they will represent the Gators well out in Oregon.”
The field will play 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play beginning on Wednesday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16.
Grassel will tee off the tournament on hole No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. PDT Monday, and is paired with Wanasa Zhou (Australia) and Esther Lee, a fellow American. Wagner will play in the group right after Grassel, going off of hole No. 10 at 9:30 a.m. and is paired with Americans Julia Potter and Waverly Whiston. Tomlinson will begin at hole No. 1 at 1:15 p.m. and is paired with Americans Christina Parsells and Erin Sargent.
The match-play rounds of the 2015 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1. Coverage will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. EDT on Aug. 12-16. Additionally, bonus coverage will be live streamed on usga.org on Aug. 13 and Aug. 16 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. EDT.
