Gator Men’s Golf to Open Season at Carpet Capital Collegiate
Thursday, September 10, 2015 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's golf team tees off its 2015-16 season at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga., on Friday. The three-day tournament will be played at The Farm Golf Club and is hosted by Georgia Tech.
This will be Florida's second year in a row beginning its season at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The Gators have competed in the event 20 times, bringing home the title twice.
UF's lineup is young but experienced. Sophomore Alejandro Tosti, the lone returner to compete this weekend, will lead the way after winning Florida's qualifying tournament. Next, four freshmen will take a swing at their first collegiate tournament and their first competition for the Orange and Blue. Jorge Garcia, Sam Horsfield, Kyler Tate and Blake Dyer secured the no. 2-5 spots and bring an abundance of experience on an international stage to the squad.
Head Coach JC Deacon
On his expectations for the season opener:
“We have an extremely young lineup – four freshmen and Alejandro (Tosti), who's only in his second semester at the University of Florida. They're very inexperienced college golf-wise, but extremely experienced worldwide golf-wise. The moment won't be too big for them, so I know if we just go play hard, embrace the opportunity and embrace the conditions that might possibly include bad weather, we're going to do great.”
On the 2015-16 team:
“Things have already changed. Our culture's new, our energy is new, our attitude is new and everyone's on such a better page than we were a year ago. I think we're a lot more prepared to go to this tournament and compete, where last year we were just trying to figure out what we were doing and who we were. I look for these guys to step in there and get after it right away.”
