FLUSHING, N.Y. – Play was suspended for the evening at the US Open due to rain on Thursday night. Gator sophomore Brooke Austin's match against UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen was completed before the final delay.
Austin fell to Van Nguyen, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round match of the American Collegiate Invitational. Van Nguyen is a two-time All-American in singles for UCLA and moves on to the semifinals in the ACI.
Fellow Gator sophomore, Josie Kuhlman, had her match suspended due to rain at the US Open courts. Kuhlman was down in her match against UCLA's Robin Anderson, 6-0, and the duo were in the process of beginning the second set.
The American Collegiate Invitational, open to only American college players, began last year as a way to spotlight college tennis during the US Open. Austin and Kuhlman are two of the eight women and eight men that compete in the event during the second week of the US Open.
