The Florida women's golf team moved up the leaderboard in the second round of competition at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., on Monday. After posting a collegiate-best score in the opening round of competition on Sunday, Gainesville native Tomlinson used an astounding seven birdies to match her Round 1 score of four-under 68. Junior Maria Torres carded four birdies on the day, and is tied for 14th place with a +1 (145). Senior Ursa Orehek scored a birdie on the final hole of the day to finish even, and help the Gators finish under-par.
Arkansas is leading the field with an impressive -11 (565) team score. Meanwhile, Clemson golfer Alice Hewson recorded the lowest round of the day -7 (65), to climb into a tie with Tomlinson atop the individual leaderboard at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club 6,204-yard course.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' second round:
“I thought we hung in there well today, and overall we finished strong. We had a stretch where we lost a little bit of our focus, but we regained it and played hard all the way to the end. I'm proud of the fight I've seen this week, and we're looking forward to tomorrow.”
On Taylor Tomlinson's performance:
“It was nice to see Taylor put some more red on the board today. She's been very smart this week, she had a great plan for this course, and there are no plans to change that for tomorrow.”
