Three Gators Earn Singles Titles at Duke Bonk Invitational

CARY, N.C. – The University of Florida women's tennis squad completed their first fall tournament on Sunday morning at the Duke Bonk Invitational in Cary, N.C. Four Gators will be bringing trophies back to Gainesville after a stellar weekend of singles action.

CARY, N.C. – The University of Florida women's tennis squad completed their first fall tournament on Sunday morning at the Duke Bonk Invitational in Cary, N.C. Four Gators will be bringing trophies back to Gainesville after a stellar weekend of singles action.

The three upperclassman on the Orange and Blue roster led the way for UF in singles this weekend. Senior Brianna Morgan did not drop a set on her way to a finals win in the Blue draw over UNC's Cassandra Vazquez, 6-1, 6-2. Belinda Woolcock secured the singles title in the Black draw with a win over another UNC competitor, Marika Akkerman. The Melbourne, Australia native completed a two-set finals win over Akkerman, 6-2, 7-6(4). Fellow-junior Kourtney Keegan had her match halted in the second set after Chalena Scholl of Duke retired while down in the contest, 6-3, 3-0.

After Kate Vialle of UNC withdrew from competition, Peggy Porter was without a competitor in her Black draw third place match. However, the Gator found a match in the Grey draw consolation finals against TCU's Sofiko Kadzhaya. The sophomore completed a two-set victory over the Horned Frog, 6-1, 6-3. Spencer Liang took home the Royal draw consolation finals title by defeating Joanna Nalborska of North Carolina State University. Anna Danilina won in her third place match against Virginia's Erica Susi, 6-2, 6-4.

Thoughts from Thornqvist:

“What a great way to end the first tournament of the fall with a perfect last day. I thought we both played great and competed well. We showed real quality this weekend. But we also found some things to improve. I'm especially happy with our performance on Day Three. We pride ourselves on being the best on the last day. Heading home with four trophies is a good feeling.”
