The Florida women's golf team completed two rounds at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday. Freshman Sam Wagner led the Gators with the only sub-par 36-hole score, finishing the day tied for second at five-under (137), just one stroke off of the lead. Wagner started the day with a stellar first-round score of -4 (67), thanks to five birdies and an eagle on the 11th hole, and she remained consistent in the second round with one birdie to score -1 (70).
Following the opening round, the Gators were tied for third among the 14-team field, but fell to fifth place after the second round of the day with a team score of +5 (573).
Kent State is leading the field with a -5 (563) team score, and Kent State golfer Taylor Kim is leading the individual competition -6 (136) at the par-71 Cherokee Country Club 5,870-yard course.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' first day of competition:
“I thought we did a lot of things well today, but overall we made too many mistakes to be really competitive. I thought that most were unforced errors, and shots that were in our control to execute. Tomorrow, the goal is to play fearless and trust the plan we have for this golf course. This course can wear on you, but, with a little more patience, I know we are capable of much more.”
On Sam Wagner's day:
“I thought Sam did a great job today. She was sharp in the first 18, and on the second 18 she did a fantastic job of staying patient when not quite as many putts fell. She made some great adjustments from last week in Charleston that I believe served her well today. The more she competes in this environment, the more she comfortable she will get, and it's exciting to watch.”
