OXFORD, Miss. – Three goals from a pair of Gator seniors gave the University of Florida soccer team a 3-0 win over Mississippi late Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Â
How the Gators Scored:
The first goal of the match started when
Sarah Troccoli won the ball at midfield. Troccoli moved down the middle and sent the ball right to
Samantha Chung located just wide of the box. The cross from Chung found
Savannah Jordan in the middle of the box. Jordan juggled for control, spun toward goal and scored from seven yards on a hard, right-footed shot.
Â
Another Gator senior scored to provide the Gators' first-half goals. From just above the endline, sophomore
Melanie Monteagudo sent a cross to the far post.
Pamela Begic was waiting on the end of that cross and headed it in. A Rebel defender attempted to clear that shot, but the official ruled the ball had crossed the goal.
Â
The Gators' third goal started with a throw-in on the Mississippi half. The ball moved from
Sarah Troccoli to
Liz Slattery before
Meggie Dougherty Howard received ball and moved toward goal. Her pass between a pair of Rebel defenders found Jordan in stride in the box. Jordan hit her second goal of the day with a right-footed shot from eight yards.
Â
Worth Noting:
- Jordan's career goals total now stands 77. She is one of 25 players in NCAA Division I history to reach that mark and she is one of seven to reach that mark since 2000.
- Jordan's goal at 6:25 is the second-quickest score for Florida in 2016. The earliest Gator goal of the season was also from Jordan (2:20 at UCLA).
- Begic scores her second goal of the season. It was the 13th of her career.
- Sunday's two-goals was Jordan's second double-goal match of the weekend, fourth of the season and the 21st multi-goal match of her collegiate career.
- The Gators were without two regulars in Gator backline Sunday as center defender Kristen Cardano and outside back Sammie Betters stayed in Gainesville after suffering injuries in Thursday's 3-1 win over Georgia. More will be known about the extent of their injuries this week.
- The shutout was Florida's fourth of the season and third of the last four matches.
- Florida has scored three goals (3-0 at LSU, 3-1 versus Georgia, 3-0 at Mississippi) in each of its last three matches.
