GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Six University of Florida soccer players were named to College Soccer Weekly All-America Teams, CSW announced today. Florida stands third in the nation for number of players named to CSW All-America teams, as NCAA runner-up North Carolina placed eight and Notre Dame placed seven among CSW's four teams.
The Gators placed two on the CSW All-America first team – forward Danielle Fotopoulos and midfielder Erin Baxter. During the 1998 soccer season, Fotopoulos set the All-Time NCAA career records for goals (118) and scoring points (284). She led the nation in 1998 with 32 goals and 75 points plus was named the NCAA Final Four Offensive MVP. Baxter, the 1998 Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP, turned in seven goals and six assists for the Gators last fall.
UF goalkeeper Meredith Flaherty and defender Erin Gilhart each earned a spot on the CSW All-America second team. Flaherty finished the 1998 season with a goals against average of 0.643 and was named the NCAA Final Four Defensive MVP after posting two shutouts. Gilhart's playing time was limited to just 15 matches in 1998 due to injuries, but she played a vital role for UF's defense at the NCAA Final Four.
Defender Heather Mitts and forward Abby Wambach appeared on the CSW Honorable Mention All-America team. Mitts and Wambach also were All-SEC First Team selections in 1998. Mitts, who led all Gators in 1998 with 2,329 minutes played, also earned a spot on the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team. Wambach ranked second on the Gator squad in 1998 with 50 points after hitting 19 goals and 12 assists.
Last month, Florida's Becky Burleigh was named the CSW Coach of the Year after leading the Gator squad to their first NCAA team title in 1998.
