Florida’s Erin Baxter Named GTE Academic All-American of the Year

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida senior soccer player Erin Baxter of Littleton, Colo., was named the GTE Fall/Winter Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, the Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association of American (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. She is the first UF female student-athlete to be named a GTE Academic All-American of the Year and the second UF student-athlete to earn the prestigious honor, as Danny Wuerffel picked up the GTE Football Academic All-American of the Year award in 1995 and '96.
In addition, Baxter was named to the GTE Academic All-America Fall At-Large first team for the second consecutive year. She appeared on the GTE Academic All-America second team as a sophomore, joining volleyball player Missy Aggertt as the only UF student-athletes to earn a spot on the team every season they were eligible for the award.
Co-captain of the Gators' 1998 NCAA Champion soccer team, Baxter was an All-American first-team selection by Soccer America and College Soccer Weekly. The midfielder also appeared on the All-America second team for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and ESPN/Soccer Times plus was a Soccer Buzz All-America third-team member. Baxter was named the Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP and also was an All-SEC first-team selection. As a senior, she stood fifth for UF in scoring with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists). She was named to the NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-America First Team and to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Baxter, who has a 3.97 GPA in marketing, will receive her bachelor's degree from UF on May 1.
