GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Florida freshman men's golfer Sam Horsfield fired a 9-under 131 in the opening two rounds of the Gator Invitational on Saturday to earn a two-shot lead and lift the Gators into first place. Florida shot -10 (550) to gain a one-stroke advantage over runner-up South Florida entering the final round.
Horsfield carded a bogey-free -7 (63) in Round 1. The score marked the lowest of his college career and tied the Gator Invitational record for the best first-round score in the tournament's 39-year history. The only previous first-round 63 was shot by Florida golfer Steve Scott in 1999. Horsfield would open the second round with three-straight birdies and finish it with a 2-under 68.
Competing as an individual, freshman Kyler Tate posted rounds of 69-68 to tie for eighth with a 3-under 137. Redshirt-junior A.J. Crouch shot rounds of 68-71, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. He's tied for 12th at -1 (139).
Joining the trio in the top 20 are sophomores Alejandro Tosti and Ryan Celano and freshmen Gordon Neale and Jorge Garcia, all tied for 18th at 1 (141). Celano and Neale are competing as individuals.
The Gators look to secure their third-straight win when they return to the Mark Bostick Golf Course on Sunday for the final round. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. View the complete pairings here.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the team's performance on Saturday:
"It was a great day. It was really fun watching the guys play at home in front of their families. They are just a treat to watch. We played really hard. We gave it our all. I don't think we were completely sharp from top to bottom as a team today, but it was a good day overall. We have a chance to win tomorrow, and that's all you can ask for."
Thoughts on Sam Horsfield's performance:
"It's nice for Sam to continue where he left off up at the Sea Best in Jacksonville. He's such a sharp tournament player. When the lights come on, Sammie is unbelievable, and he really gets it going, and he did that again today. Sixty three is just a phenomenal round of golf. I'm really happy for him, and it's nice to see that low number pop up."
Freshman Sam Horsfield:
On participating in his first Gator Invitational:
"I feel like we played pretty good as a team. I played pretty well myself. It's pretty weird having all these teams here and all these people around, but it was a really cool environment, and I was having fun."
On his opening-round -7 (63):
"I got off to a really good start. I was 4-under after nine in the first round, and then I made two birdies in the beginning of the back nine, so I was 7-under quite quick and just held on from there. In the second round, I actually started off with three birdies in a row, so both rounds I got off to a hot start.Tomorrow I'm going to hopefully play my game and see what happens."
