Sunday, February 7, 2016 | Women's Golf
The Gator women's golf team opened play on Sunday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, in Palos Verdes, Calif. The No. 12 Gators posted a Round 1 team score of +3 (287) and are currently fourth within a stacked 16-team field, which features 10 teams from Golfweek's Top 25.
Day one of the three-day event saw junior Kelly Grassel and freshman Sam Wagner each lead the Gators with a one-under par score of 70. Grassel recorded three birdies on the back nine, but a bogey on the 18th hole kept her at one-under. Wagner remained consistent throughout the day, as she shot even on 13 holes, while a birdie on the 17th provided the push to get her under par. The pair of Gators enter Monday's second round in a tie for sixth place at the par-71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Gators' SEC rival Alabama is on top of the team leaderboard after Round 1 at -6 (278), while Janie Jackson from Alabama and Lexi Harkins from North Carolina are leading the individual competition at -3 (68).
Assistant Coach Janice Olivencia:
On the Gators' Round 1 play:
"Today was a good start for us, as we are in the mix of things. We had a great practice round yesterday, and the team adapted to the environment quickly. The golf course was playing tough today, but we hung in there. Tomorrow, we will stick to our plan and be assertive."
