Gators Seeking NCAA Indoor Championships Victories in Birmingham
Thursday, March 10, 2016 | Track and Field
Florida's men last won the title in 2012, while its women's lone national championship came in 1992
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Florida track and field program is eager to start lacing up spikes at this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, which will begin Friday (March 11) and conclude on Saturday (March 11) evening at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Florida boasts 18 total entries for this year's national meet.
The Gators enter the NCAA Indoor Championships ranked No. 1 on the women's side and No. 3 on the men's half of the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings. Since 2010, four of the six women's teams who entered the national meet ranked No. 1 went on to win the title. This is just the second time in the last seven seasons UF is not the top-ranked men's team heading into the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Florida's men are seeking the program's fourth indoor crown, as it last won the title in 2012, when it capped a run of three consecutive championships. The women's lone national title came at the 1992 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Live streaming of the NCAA Indoor Championships will be provided by ESPN3 via Watch ESPN. Day one is set to begin streaming at 6:25 p.m. ET, while Saturday's action will start broadcasting at 4:55 ET. A highlight-based replay of the meet will be broadcast at 7 p.m. ET Sunday (March 13) on ESPN2.

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Florida track and field head coach Mike Holloway spoke with the media a pre-meet press conference on Thursday (March 10) afternoon. Here's what he had to say:
Opening statement…
"We're very excited to be here. For some reason, this indoor season has seemed very long for me. But I'm glad it's coming to a close. The people of Birmingham always do an awesome job of putting on competitions, and I'm sure they'll do a wonderful job this weekend. Just excited to get here tomorrow, start firing some guns and jumping in pits."
On how Florida could finish fourth at the SEC Indoor Championships but have a good shot at winning a national title…
"We're a better national team than we were a conference team. We didn't have the depth in some of the events, on either side, that we've had in the past. They're two different meets, two different situations, and, again, we are just a better national team. The stars line up better for us as far as the national indoor meet than it does for the conference meet."
On what it is that allows the Gators to be a contender on the national stage…
"We have some very talented athletes … and we've done a good job recruiting them. And we think we can coach a little bit. Being in our conference prepares you for this meet. Anybody that's been through that (doesn't) come here with fear of anybody else. It prepares you for these championships. It's a matter of coming in here now, putting the spikes on, and getting busy."
