GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two Gators pick up Southeastern Conference weekly gymnastics honors, the league office announced today. Senior Bridget Sloan is the co-SEC Gymnast of the Week and sophomore Alex McMurtry claims the SEC Specialist of the Week honor. This is the final weekly awards, as regular-season action ended last weekend for the SEC teams.
This is Sloan's sixth SEC Gymnast of the Week honor for 2016 and the 13th for her career. McMurtry is a four-time recipient of the SEC Specialist of Week in 2016 and now has five such awards in her career. A Gator has received at least one of the league's three weekly awards for eight of the 10 weeks of the season.
Sloan's Performance:
In the Gators' win over North Carolina in the regular-season finale last Friday, Sloan used the nation's top total of the season to win her sixth all-around title of the season. Sloan equaled the nation's top all-around total for the second time (39.775) for the win. Three have turned in that total in 2016 – Sloan is the only one to record it in multiple outings.
Sloan's final routine in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center was a floor exercise 10.0. She's scored two perfect beam marks earlier this season and her career 10.0 total stands at a team-record eight.
She shared the evening's vault win with teammates McMurtry and Kennedy Baker at 9.925.
Sloan's results Friday move her to second on Florida's career charts for event (88) and all-around (24) wins.
Sloan is the only gymnast to appear in nation's top 10 for each of the five events – No. 1 all-around (39.630 RQS), No. 2 in bars (9.945), No. 3 floor (9.945), No. 6 beam (9.910), and No. T10 vault (9.90).
McMurtry's Performance:
McMurtry added her second uneven bars 10.0 in the dual meet win versus North Carolina on March 11. She earned her first uneven bars 10.0 in the Jan. 29 dual meet.
McMurtry is the only gymnast in the nation to earn a 10.0 for bars in 2016.
She also shared the evening's vault title with Baker and Sloan at 9.925. McMurtry is second among the 2016 Gators with 13 event titles (five vault, four bars, beam).
In the latest national rankings, McMurtry holds top 10 spots for three events – No. 3 beam (9.935 RQS), No. 5 bars (9.930), No. T6 vault (9.915 RQS).
Next up for the Gators:
Next up, No. 2 Florida heads to the 2016 Southeastern Conference Championships, set for March 19 in the Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
