GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Alfredo Perez of the University of Florida men's tennis team was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon.
Perez helped the Gators to a 7-0 sweep of their in-state rival, Florida State on Saturday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. Along with sophomore Chase Perez-Blanco, the Havana, Cuba native clinched the doubles point for the Orange and Blue with a strong forehand to seal the 6-4 match victory and give the Gators the 1-0 lead over the Seminoles.
In singles, Perez matched up against Aziz Dougaz in what would be the closest singles match of the day. The two players split the first two sets and went to a
match tie-breaker. After going back and forth, Perez would grab the third set victory 10-8 and the Gators would go on to sweep the familiar foe.
The Gator freshman has already compiled a 21-6 record during the season, including a 5-1 record in dual match play at the No. 3 and 4 positions.
UF opens SEC dual match play this Friday night at the No. 32 LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. The Gators will conclude the road trip on Sunday at No. 8 Texas A&M.
