Anders Eriksson is one of four SEC throwers since 2011 to record a mark of 69-plus meters in the hammer throw prior to regional and national competition
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida thrower Anders Eriksson was named the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced in a release Tuesday (March 22) afternoon.
In his first collegiate meet, Eriksson won the Black & Gold Challenge's hammer throw title with a 69.83-meter toss, joining Georgia's Alex Poursanidis (2015), Alabama's Elias Hakansson (2014), and former Gator Jeremy Postin (2012) as the only other SEC throwers since 2011 to record a mark of 69-plus meters prior to the NCAA Preliminaries and Championships.
The mark, which leads the SEC and ranks second nationally, is the farthest by a Division I freshman in his debut performance since at least 2010. Moreover, Eriksson is just the fourth Division I freshman since 2002 to throw at least 69.83 meters prior to the NCAA Preliminaries and Championships.
The Swede's throw also ranks No. 2 on Florida's all-time outdoor top 10.
Eriksson and the Gators will continue their outdoor campaign this weekend at both the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles and Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State.
