Gators complete regular season after 2 weeks in Atlanta at NCAAs
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- University of Florida Swimming and Diving Head Coach Gregg Troy addressed the media on Monday following two weeks of competition at the 2016 NCAA Championships in Atlanta. Both the men's and women's championships were held inside the McAuley Aquatic Center -- the host site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
This past week on the men's side, the Gators tallied two national titles, eight school records, and 37 All-America honors on its way to a third-place finish. The Florida women left Atlanta on March 19, with eight All-Americans and a new school record in the diving well.
Coach Troy on the two weeks in Atlanta:
"The women's meet wasn't exactly what we expected and we fell a little short of what our season goals were. But we raced tremendously well. Natalie Hinds was right at the school record in the 100-Yard freestyle, Jessica Thielmann put up some good swims and Kahlia Warner dove really well on the diving end. Those Three were mainstays for us.
"While this last week wasn't necessarily where we wanted, we were really pleased with how the season as a whole went. We progressed throughout the season and had a great dual meet portion of the year and we're seeing a lot of talent from our younger swimmers that will perform very well for us moving forward.
"On the men's side, we saw almost the exact opposite. They had a fast start on Wednesday night in the 800-Yard freestyle relay and carried that speed throughout the week.
"The third-place finish was good. We always hope to do a little better but it was a tremendous performance. It wraps up a great year for our seniors and a lot of the young guys. It shows a bright future for what's ahead."
Troy Added.
"I'd also like to extend a special thank you to our entire coaching staff. None of our success this season would have been possible if it weren't for their help. Anthony Nesty, Martyn Wilby, Steve Jungbluth, and Leah Stancil have done a tremendous job working with the swimmers on the men's and women's side while Coach Schultz has done a great job with moving our diving program forward."
