Sanders is the NCAA leader in the 100 meters and boasts the top wind-legal 200 meters time in the nation
NEW ORLEANS – Florida sprinter Shayla Sanders was named the NCAA Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Tuesday (March 29) afternoon.
This past Saturday (March 26) at the Power Conference Cardinal & Gold Challenge in Los Angeles, Sanders ran a wind-legal, NCAA-leading time of 11.13 seconds in the 100 meters, tying Michelle Freeman's 24-year-old school record. Less than an hour later, the redshirt junior clocked the nation's fastest wind-legal time in the 200 meters (22.77 seconds).
Sanders' time in the 200 meters is also the No. 2-ranked time on Florida's all-time outdoor top 10.
Moreover, Sanders beacme only the fifth SEC runner since 2009 to break 11.15 and 22.78 in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively, prior to the NCAA East and West Preliminaries.
Sanders and the Gators continue their outdoor campaign this weekend (March 31-April 2), when they host the Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track, located inside James G. Pressly Stadium. More information on the Pepsi Florida Relays is available here.
