
Freshman Alfredo Perez earned his third SEC Freshman of the Week nod on Monday morning

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two members of the No. 13 University of Florida men's tennis team swept the SEC Weekly Honors on Monday morning. Senior Diego Hidalgo was named the SEC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and freshman Alfredo Perez was awarded the SEC Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.
Hidalgo was a perfect 4-0 this weekend over opponents ranked 71 or higher in the ITA individual rankings. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native is currently on a five-match winning streak in both doubles and singles, with all of those victories coming against ranked opponents, including five being Top-25 competitors.
The senior leads the Florida team with a 16 dual match singles wins, 11 dual match doubles wins and completed the SEC regular season with a 10-2 singles record. Along with fellow-senior Gordon Watson, the tandem clinched the doubles point for the Orange and Blue on Sunday afternoon, which was also Senior Day.
Perez also swept competition over the weekend to compile a 3-0 combined record. The Gator defeated last week's SEC Freshman of the Week, Kentucky's No. 35-ranked Matsumara, on Friday night to help UF shutout No. 20 Kentucky, 7-0. Along with doubles partner, Chase Perez-Blanco, the pairing clinched the doubles point on Friday night for their fourth doubles point clinching victory and third in SEC play.
After moving up to the No. 2 position, the freshman is 3-1 at that line and 15-4 overall in dual match singles, including a 10-2 record in SEC play. The 10-2 mark is tied for first on the team in SEC singles. With two victories over the weekend, the Havana, Cuba native grabbed his 30th and 31st singles wins for an overall 31-9 record in his freshman campaign.
Up next, the Gators are the No.2 seed in the 2016 SEC Tournament that will commence in Columbia, S.C. Florida will play the winner of LSU and Vanderbilt on Friday, April 22 at 10 a.m. ET.
