Sunday, April 3, 2016 | Women's Golf
Sunset, S.C. – The No. 8 Florida women's golf team ended the regular season on Sunday by capturing its fourth-straight victory and sixth victory in the last seven tournaments at the Clemson Invitational, in Sunset, S.C. The Gators' squad carded a -1 (287) in the final round to survive a late push from runner-up No. 33 Furman -3 (285).
Freshman Sam Wagner's 54-hole score of -5 (211) marks her second-straight under-par tournament score and her second-straight finish in the top five, as she placed fourth. Junior Karolina Vlckova matched her season-best tournament total of -4 (212) to place fifth; she leads the team with six top-10 finishes this season.
Sophomore Taylor Tomlinson and junior Sydney Needham were the only Gators to card under-par scores (71) in the third round, helping the team lock down its sixth title of the season. Katie Sharp of Michigan State took home the individual title at -8 (208), at the 6,253-yard Reserve at Lake Keowee.
The Orange and Blue will now focus on the postseason after winning the most titles in one season for the program since 1986, a year in which the Gators were crowned national champions.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On the Gators' fourth-straight team title:
"I'm really happy for the team. This win was hard fought. Vanderbilt and Furman played great golf today and made it exciting. I was really impressed with our toughness this weekend. It wasn't our best day, but we fought hard all the way to the end, and it paid off."
Freshman Sam Wagner:
On placing fourth individually and the winning the team title:
"I felt like I played solid for the majority of the tournament. Today, I struggled in the beginning part of the round but was able to make it work coming in and making some putts to help the team win. I am extremely proud of how the entire team handled this week and today especially. We all contributed to this win coming down the stretch, and it feels really great to finish out our regular season strong."
