Kunle Fasasi is only the fourth conference freshman since 2002 to run 45.43 or faster prior to the NCAA Preliminaries
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida sprinter Kunle Fasasi was named the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced in a release Tuesday (April 5) afternoon.
Last Friday (April 1) at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fasasi ran an NCAA-leading 400 meters time of 45.43 seconds. Moreover, Fasasi is the first SEC freshman since 2010, and only the fifth conference freshman since 2002 (Travaris Tate, Mississippi State, 2010; Kirani James, Alabama, 2010; Tony McQuay, Florida, 2010; Christian Taylor, Florida, 2009) to run 45.43 or faster prior to the NCAA Preliminaries.
Among Gators freshmen, only Tony McQuay (45.37) and Christian Taylor (45.34) ran faster prior to the NCAA Preliminaries since 2002.
Fasasi, a native of Oyo State, Nigeria, also ran on two of Florida's three 4x400-meter relay teams this past weekend. Friday's crew clocked in at 3:06.61 in the prelims, while Saturday's group won the final with a time of 3:06.04. Those times rank No. 16 and No. 9, respectively, among Division I relay teams this year.
Fasasi and the Gators will continue their outdoor campaign in two weeks when they host the Tom Jones Memorial Invite in Gainesville. Continue to check FloridaGators.com for more information related to the team's final home meet of 2016.
