Sunday, May 22, 2016 | Women's Golf
EUGENE, Ore – Junior Kelly Grassel recorded an even-par 72 on Sunday to lead the University of Florida women's golf team in the third round of the NCAA Golf National Championship and earn a spot in the final round of stroke play. The Gators carded a +8 (296) and finished with an overall tournament score of +22 (297-293-296-886). With a 17th place finish, UF did not make the top 15 cut, and team play for the 2015-16 season comes to an end.
Grassel finished tied for 27th place, and as one of the top nine finishers on a non-advancing team, she advances to play a fourth round on Monday to compete for the individual tournament title. She carded her second-straight even-par round Sunday to wrap up Round 3 at +2 (74-72-72-218).
Grassel, along with sophomore Taylor Tomlinson, finished first and second in the number of made pars during the first three rounds of the tournament, with 44 and 43, respectively. Tomlinson recorded the only under-par round of the tournament for the Gators, finishing tied for 70th place with a total of +6 (71-75-76-222)
The team leader after the third round is the University of Southern California at -4 (860). The individual leader is Virginia Elena Carta from Duke, who posted a score of -13 (69-68-66-203).
The top 15 teams and top nine finishers not on an advancing team through three rounds advance to the fourth round on Monday. Monday's round will determine the top eight teams, as well as the individual tournament champion. The top eight teams following the fourth round will go on to compete in match play on Tuesday and Wednesday for the team championship.
The Orange and Blue concludes the season with seven team titles and will return all five members of the national championship lineup for the 2016-17 season.

On the third round:
"Everyone is obviously disappointed, as this is not how we envisioned the season ending. The team worked hard today, as they did all week. I am proud of their effort. Our games were just not sharp enough, and we didn't adjust very well to this golf course and the conditions here in Oregon. That held us back from being more competitive."
On the 2015-16 season:
"We had a tremendous and record-setting season. We made huge strides as a program, and individually, all of our players got better. There are so many positives from this year, all of which are a little bittersweet at the moment. In time, we will be able to reflect on how far we've come and how much we accomplished this year."
On Kelly Grassel advancing to the final round of stroke play:
"I am happy for Kelly and the opportunity she has tomorrow. She deserves it, and she came to play this week. Kelly cares so much for her team. She has been such an asset for us this season, and we will be out there to cheer her on tomorrow."
