EUGENE, Ore. – Winning three tournaments and placing in the top 25 at the NCAA Championship led University of Florida golfer Sam Horsfield to receive the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. Horsfield is the second Gator to win the Phil Mickelson Award, as Camilo Villegas also won in 2001.
The accolade is the third Horsfield received this week, as he was named a PING First-Team All-American on Tuesday and selected to the PING All-Southeast Region team on Sunday. Other honors Horsfield received this season include being chosen as the SEC Freshman of the Year, named First Team All-SEC and selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team, as well as being tabbed a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus awards. Horsfield will play for Team Europe at the Arnold Palmer Cup later this month.
Winning the Phil Mickelson Award earned Horsfield a spot on the All-Freshmen Team, alongside Will Gordon and Patrick Martin of Vanderbilt, California's Collin Morikawa and Alabama's Davis Riley.
