Florida Men and Women Earn CSCAA Scholar All-America Honors
Wednesday, June 15, 2016 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
Both teams totaled above a 3.00 GPA in the spring semester
The Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams, which finished third and 19th respectively in the 2016 NCAA Championships, have been selected as College Swimming Coaches Association of America's (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams. The CSCAA announced the recognized teams on Wednesday.
Eligible programs must have earned a grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the spring semester. The Florida women's team is one of 12 Southeastern Conference members to receive the honor, while the men's team is joined by nine SEC members on the list.
"This is a welcome change to the headlines that have dominated intercollegiate athletics in recent weeks," said CSCAA executive director Joel Shinofield. "In reality, however, this is what we've come to expect in our sport."
Shinofield added that 80 percent of Division I programs earned GPAs of 3.00 or better.
"These programs are the incubators of our Olympic success, and they compete at the highest level at some of our most prestigious institutions," he said. "The hard work and dedication they learn at the pool translates directly to their success in the classroom and beyond regardless of division."
Both Gator teams also earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors in the fall 2015 semester.
Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) – the oldest organization of college coaches in America – is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming & diving at the collegiate level.
