CLOVIS, Calif. – University of Florida track and field incoming freshmen Connor Bandel and Noah Lyles won United States Track and Field Junior Championships titles this past weekend (June 24-26) in Clovis, Calif. Those victories earned them spots on Team USA for this summer's IAAF World Junior Championships.
Bandel, who'd never thrown the junior implement prior to competition, was head and shoulders above the field in the discus throw, winning by 13 feet, 3 inches. The Oxford, Mich. native's top mark was 61.75 meters (202 feet, 7 inches).
Lyles set his sights on a sub-10-second time, but only needed 10.08 to retain his junior champion status.
Lyles punched his ticket to Poland by successfully defending his USATF Junior title in the 100 meters. The Alexandra, Va. native clocked a speedy 10.08 seconds to defeat Ohio State rising sophomore Nicholas Gray by over two tenths of a second. Lyles was scheduled to defend his 200 meters title as well, but scratched in order to focus on preparations for next week's United States Olympic Trials.
Two of the weekend's other top performances came from incoming freshmen Brandee' Johnson and Grant Holloway in the hurdles.
Johnson finished third in the 400-meter hurdles final, which featured five collegians and the American junior record holder. Holloway, who also competed in the long jump, placed third in the 110-meter hurdles, missing the final Team USA spot by five hundredths of a second.
Rising sophomore Jack Guyton enjoyed a solid weekend, too, as the Tampa, Fla. product posted a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 meters.
