JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- University of Florida freshman Sam Horsfield birdied a playoff hole at the Timuquana Country Club Sectional Qualifier on Tuesday to clinch a spot in the U.S. Open for the second-straight year. Horsfield, who was named the recipient of Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award last week, earned low amateur honors as well.
Horsfield carded a 4-under 68 on Monday before play was suspended midway through Round 2 becuase of weather impacts from Tropical Storm Colin. The Davenport, Fla., native wrapped up the second round with a 2-under 70 to tie for third at -6 (138). Sectional medalist Aaron Price (9-under 135) and runner-up Tim Wilkinson (7-under 137) earned two of the four advancing spots. Horsfield and the four other golfers tied for third (Matthew Borchert, Willie Mack III, Zachary Edmondson and Joey Garber) entered a sudden-death playoff to determine the final two qualifiers.
Horsfield and Borchert birdied the first playoff hole to punch their tickets to the 116th U.S. Open, which will be played June 16-19 at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. Horsfield competed in the U.S. Open last year but failed to make the cut following the second round.
