Yanis David's winning jump was just six centimeters off her personal record
Bydgoszcz, Poland – The University of Florida track and field program saw three Gators compete at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland this past week, with rising sophomore Yanis David claiming a gold medal in the long jump.
After reaching the final with the seventh-best mark of the qualifying round, David, who represented France, leapt 6.42 meters on her opening attempt to take the title on Friday (July 22). David's mark was two centimeters better than silver medalist Sophie Weissnberg's top jump.
David also reached the triple jump final, finishing 10th overall.
Incoming freshmen Connor Bandel (discus throw) and Brandee' Johnson (400 hurdles) both competed in the prelims of their respective events, but neither advanced. Bandel and Johnson both represented the United States.
Also in international competition, the 13 UF track and field Olympians will begin competition in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, August 12.
