Arroyo races again Saturday night at 9:05 p.m. ET
RIO DE JANEIRO – Rising senior Andres Arroyo (Puerto Rico) got the Olympics off to a historical start for the 12 Gators in Rio de Janeiro Friday morning (Aug. 12).
In his Olympic debut, Arroyo became the first Puerto Rican in history to advance to the 800 meters semifinals.
Arroyo clocked a time of 1:46.17 to take third place in Heat 2 of the preliminaries, nabbing an automatic berth for Saturday (Aug. 13) night's semifinals, which are scheduled for 9:05 p.m. ET on NBC.
Arroyo joins Mark Everett (United States), a finalist at the 1992 Olympics, and Horace Tuitt (Trinidad), who made the semis at the 1976 Olympics, as the only other men in school history to advance to the 800 semifinals. Hazel Clark (United States) qualified for the women's 800 final at the 2000 Olympics, making Arroyo the fourth overall Gator to qualify for the semifinals.
Arroyo's fellow Gators Genevieve LaCaze (Australia) will begin her Olympic medal pursuits tomorrow morning. LaCaze will run the 3,000-meter steeplechase preliminary at 9:05 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.
