Gator Great Sandra Gal competed in golf, which returned to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years
RIO DE JANEIRO – Gator golfing great Sandra Gal (pronounced GUALL; rhymes with 'Ball') completed her first of four rounds of stroke play at the Olympic Games on Wednesday in Rio.
Gal was the only Gator letterwinner in action at the Olympic Games on Wednesday.

- Former University of Florida standout Sandra Gal made history Wednesday as the first Gator golfer to ever compete in the Olympics.
- Gal, competing for Germany, opened the first round with a solid performance, carding an even-par 71 to sit tied for 26th on the leaderboard.
- Gal will be back in action on Thursday for the Second Round at 7:41 A.M. ET.
- The overall leader after the first round is Ariya Jutanugarn (Thailand) with a -6 (65). A full leaderboard can be found here.

More About Olympic Golf
- Gal is one of 60 female golfers to compete in Rio, and qualified as the top-rated female from Germany. The top-15 world-ranked players are eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top-15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top-15.
- Competition will span from August 17-20, and consists of 72 holes of individual stroke play. Scores are cumulative from round to round with all competitors playing 72 holes. There is no 36-hole cut. The golfer with the lowest aggregate score wins. In the event of a tie for first, second or third place, a play-off or multiple play-offs shall be conducted for the purpose of determining the gold, silver and bronze medal winners.
Thursday's Olympic Schedule
- Gator letterwinners will compete in the sports of golf, track & field and volleyball at the Olympic Games on Wednesday.
- Morning action features Sandra Gal (Germany) in second round golf, as well as Kemal Mesic (Bosnia) and Stipe Zunic (Croatia) in the qualifying round for the shot put, with the final later in the evening.
- Kerron Clement (USA) runs in the final of the 400 meter hurdles at 11 a.m. ET
- Kelly Murphy and Team USA play Serbia in the volleyball semifinals beginning at 12 Noon ET.
