Volleyball
An historical day for Gator volleyball -- Kelly Murphy and Team USA vs. Aury Cruz and Puerto Rico -- did not disappoint. While Cruz led Puerto Rico in its first EVER Olympic volleyball match at Maracanãzinho, Murphy put on a show for Team USA, ranked No. 1 in the world entering the Olympics, to lead the Americans to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) sweep over Puerto Rico to open group play.
Murphy provided a spark in the first frame with a team-best six points, and finished the day tied atop the USA box score with 14 points on 13 kills and a block as Team USA hit a staggering .466 in the match. Puerto Rico challenged USA in the second with a 19-17 lead before Team USA pulled away en route to the eventual sweep. While Puerto Rico fell short, Cruz tied for second on the team with eight kills on the afternoon.
Murphy and Cruz will be back in action Monday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, USA versus the Netherlands, while Puerto Rico squares off with Serbia.
