Gainesville, Fla. – To say that Jordan Belga has had a good season so far is an understatement. The junior just earned his second singles title, making that one title for every tournament he has participated in. Belga defeated South Florida's Peter Bertran 6-1, 6-2 to take the title in the "A" draw singles competition.
Freshman David Sarkissov followed close behind Belga's impressive run at the Bedford Cup, earning his own singles title in the back draw on Sunday. This is the second tournament for both Sarkissov and fellow freshman Stephen Madonia.
At the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., Gator newcomer Johannes Ingildsen proved that he deserved to be seeded at the top of his draw. The freshman has gone undefeated in the tournament and will move on to the Division II finals round on Monday morning.
The fifth-seeded duo of Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman has stayed on top of their competition in the Division II doubles draw, and will advance to the semifinals on Monday morning. McClain Kessler and Joseph Guillin have also had an impressive run in the doubles competition, and will advance to the semifinals round of the Division II draw on Monday.
Assistant Coach Scott Perelman:
"Jordan had two tournaments on back to back weekends. Since becoming a Gator, Jordan has steadily improved due to his outstanding work ethic and unbelievable determination. He represents the Gator tennis program in a first-class manner. We are happy for Jordan and very proud of him and his efforts on and off the court."
"David Sarkissov won the back draw today with two solid wins. He is improving and getting more and more comfortable every day. We look forward to his progress in the future. It was a good, solid weekend for the Gators."
Preseason rankings
Four Gators were ranked highly in the 2016 ITA Preseason Rankings, and all four will get to see their first tournament of the season this weekend.
