U.S. Under-23 National Camp begins Friday at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif.
Two members of the 2016 Gator soccer team – Meggie Dougherty Howard and Gabby Seiler – are headed to California for first U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team camp, which runs Jan. 6-13 at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif.
The 30-player roster is a mix of top players from the U.S. Youth National Teams, elite college players and four NWSL players. The camp features players from seven different birth years, ranging from 1994 (which is the age cut-off for this year's U-23 WNT) to 2000.
U.S. WNT head coach Jill Ellis and her staff will observe several training sessions to evaluate players for potential full Women's National Team call-ups.
Both Gators earned 2016 All-Southeastern Conference and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region first-team honors. Dougherty Howard also was named to the NSCAA All-America third team and was the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player. From her defensive midfield position, Dougherty Howard led Florida with 12 assists, second in points (28) and tied for second in goals (8) – all collegiate highs. Seiler's versatility saw her playing at midfield, center or outside back for the Gators in 2016. She played the entirety of 10 matches.
Dougherty Howard was part of the 2016 U-23 team that won the Nordic Tournament in England in June. Seiler also was invited to a U.S. U-23 camp in January of 2016.
This is the second U.S. Youth National Team camp in as many months that includes a Gator. In December, Gator goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese participated in the U.S. U-19 Camp, also held at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center.
