GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida State soccer used a pair of first half goals to defeat the Gators 2-0 Thursday evening in front of 1,412 at the James G. Pressly Stadium.
Â
This was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2015 season. Hurricane Hermine caused the cancellation of the 2016 meeting in Tallahassee. Hurricane Irma forced the rescheduling of this match from Sept. 8 to Oct. 12.
Â
This was the first shutout since 2013 and eighth since 2000 (four for each team) in the series between the two nationally ranked programs.
Â
How the Goals Were Scored:
Florida State's first goal came off a free kick from Deyna Castellanos. The official awarded the free kick after he ruled the ball UF goalkeeper
Kaylan Marckese picked up in the box came off the foot of a Gator defender, not the Seminole she was marking. Castellanos put in her 11
th goal of the season in the near post upper corner at 1:06. It was the earliest goal conceded by the Gators this season.
Â
The Seminoles took a 2-0 halftime lead in the 24
th minute when came when Gloria Villalobos's slanted pass found Dallas Dorosy perfectly in stride. Dorosy took a touch and then scored from 15 yards for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
The Gators had some good looks at the goal, including a shot that hit the post by
Deanne Rose in the seventh minute. Florida kept pressing until the end as
Laís Araujo's hard shot from 17 yards with less than three minutes remaining deflected back into play, but the Gators couldn't get another shot off.
Â
For the match, Florida led 10-8 in shots, but the Seminoles edged the Gators 5-4 in shots on goal. Florida State earned its sixth shutout of the season Thursday.
What the Gators Said:
On how FSU took UF out of their element in the beginning of the game:
"I think that was self-induced. Unfortunately, it was just a little bit of a communication issue and you cannot give [Deyna] Castellanos a free kick from the 18. She is deadly with those. We know that. As a matter of fact, we talked about it in our scouting report.
Â
"But that for me is like OK we gave up the goal but next play. I think for us to face a 2-0 deficit, it was a great learning experience for us because it required us to make some changes at halftime in terms of the system that we played. I thought our team responded really well and really got after it." - Florida Head Soccer Coach
Becky Burleigh
Â
On amount of opportunities:
"I thought we played with a lot of urgency and intensity. Unlucky to not get at least one back and probably should have had two in the first half. So again, sometimes there's opportunities and we finish them and sometimes it doesn't happen. But I really liked our response in the second half." - - Florida Head Soccer Coach
Becky Burleigh
Â
On Gators effort today:
"We never gave up. It was just a great effort from everyone. We were never really on our toes the entire time. We just gave to our all, and I'm very proud of us for that." – junior midfielder
Mayra Pelayo
Â
On team's mindset after trailing at halftime:
"Going into the second half, we went into it like it was a 0-0 at this point. We can't really play with anything hanging over our heads. So that's how we went about it in the second half, and I think it showed.
Â
"We had high energy, high intensity. Some nights you're just not going to find the back of the net and it's just unlucky." – senior midfielder
Gabby Seiler
