Senior John Egbunu one of 20 players on the list
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – John Egbunu has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Friday.
The Florida senior is one of 20 centers on the list to begin the season. Named after Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the annual honor in its fourth year recognizes the top centers in men's college basketball.
Egbunu set the tone for the Gators on the boards last season, leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game. Despite his season ending in February due to injury, Egbunu tallied 31 dunks, the most of any Florida player. He also set the UF single-season record for most dunks with 75 in 2015-16.
The watch list of 20 players for the award will be trimmed down to 10 players in mid-February with the five finalists being presented to the committee in March. The winner of the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday, April 6, 2018.
