No. 6 Florida Faces No. 1 Virginia on Saturday
Friday, February 10, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 6 Florida men's tennis team will face the toughest competition it has seen this season as the Gators head out to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the reigning national champions – the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers.
The last time Florida faced Virginia was in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, where the 1st-seeded Cavaliers defeated the 9th-seeded Gators 4-0, moving on to win the championship. The Gators have not beaten the Cavaliers under Bryan Shelton – but the same was true about the USC Trojans, a top 10 team that the Gators beat at home just last weekend.
The Gators have been on a roll so far this season, to say the least, as the team has gone undefeated in the 2017 dual season. With three non-conference wins to start the season, Florida continued on to collect a conference win against LSU and two ranked wins against USC and UCLA to earn the best starting record the team has seen since 2013.
This match will prepare the Gators for the National Team Indoor Championships, where the team will return to Charlottesville to compete against some of the top tennis programs in the country. The Gators' sweep of the ITA Kick Off Weekend that they hosted in Gainesville qualified them for the event, which will be hosted by the University of Virginia.
