Nuclear engineering Master's student
Canyon Barry has been named the Division I men's basketball CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year, the sport's highest academic honor.
Barry, who is playing at Florida as a graduate transfer this season, has a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout college, which includes a physics degree from College of Charleston.
The 6-foot-6 Colorado Springs, Colo., native has made his impact felt on the floor, as well, averaging 12.4 points per game for the 12th-ranked Gators. He leads the SEC with an 89.2 percent free throw percentage and has hit a team-best 99 free throws.
Barry becomes the second Gator to receive the honor, with Matt Bonner winning in 2002 and 2003. He also joins Bonner and Lee Humphrey as first-team Academic All-American honorees.
While at College of Charleston, Barry twice made the Academic All-America Team (first team in 2016 and second team in 2015).
Three Academic All-America of the Year honors by a Gator matches the total of all other SEC schools in the 30-year history of the award, (Georgia two, Vanderbilt one). Other notable past winners of the award include Jacque Vaughn, Shane Battier and Emeka Okafor.
