INDIANAPOLIS – Two top-25 finishes from Gator rookies highlighted the Florida women's third day at the NCAA Championships.
In the 400 IM, Savanna Faulconer finished just shy of the two alternate spots for finals in 19th, while Emma Ball, initially seeded 29th, tied for 23rd in the 100 back.
Additionally, Ball and two other Gators cut time off their qualifying marks.
"I'm proud of the efforts," said head coach Gregg Troy. "Several over-corrected and were a bit overly aggressive. All raced much more aggressively."
400 IM
The 400 IM featured Gators Kay Sargent, Hannah Burns, Savanna Faulconer and Kelly Fertel. Kay Sargent finished sixth in heat 3 at 4:14.39, while Hannah Burns placed fourth in heat 4 at 4:10.99. In heat 6, Savanna Faulconer finished sixth at 4:09.33. Kelly Fertel finished eighth in the closing heat at 4:11.40. In the field, Sargent placed 41st, Burns 28th, Faulconer 19th and Fertel 29th.
100 fly
Alyssa Yambor-Maul had a great showing in the 100 fly, winning the opening heat and earning a 39th-place finish overall. She improved on her seed time by .39 seconds, touching in 53.29 during prelims.
100 back
Sydney Sell and Emma Ball earned a pair of top-3 finishes in their heats. Sell touched second in heat 2 at 53.42, shaving .03 seconds off her seed time. Ball also bettered her seed time, earning a third-place finish in heat 5 at 52.40. She improved by .09 seconds. Overall, Sell placed 41st, and Ball tied for 23rd.
3-meter
In her NCAA debut, Teya Syskakis put together a 32nd-place finish on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 281.15.
"Very solid effort today for Teya," said diving coach Bryan Gillooly. "Although we would have liked to place higher, she was consistent and aggressive throughout, and that's what it will take to be successful in the future. Her slight misses on some of her dives were the result of over-rotations, which means she wasn't holding back. That is something to be proud of. Now we just need to harness that energy, and she will be a finalist next year for sure."
Florida ends its NCAAs tomorrow, with 200 back, 200 breast and 200 fly prelims beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The 1650 free early heats will start at approximately 3:45 p.m. after platform trials and consolation finals conclude.
