GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Monday night in front of their fellow UF student-athletes, four Gators were recognized at the 2017 Florida Letterman Awards, held at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
The eighth annual Florida Letterman Awards (also nicknamed "FLAs") were planned, organized and run by Florida's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and celebrated the accomplishments of Gator student-athletes during the 2016 calendar year.
Caeleb Dressel earned both the Male Athlete of the Year (given to the student-athlete who accomplished the most in his season) and Male Performance of the Year (given to the student-athlete who had an outstanding game, meet or match that should be recognized above all else) awards for his work in the pool during the 2016 SEC and NCAA Championships.
Following the NCAA Championships, Dressel was named CSCAA Co-Swimmer of the Year after winning two national titles in the 50 and 100 free and collecting seven All-America honors. At the time, his 18.20 time in the 50 free and 40.46 in the 100 free broke UF, NCAA, American and U.S. Open records. During SECs, he received the Male Swimmer of the Meet honor, totaling six conference titles. At the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, Dressel was named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Year and earned a spot on the All-SEC first team.
Sophomore Christoph Margotti received Male Scholar of the Year. He is working his way toward a degree in finance while balancing a challenging class and swimming schedule, and he currently boasts a GPA of 3.85.
Ben Lawless and Alyssa Yambor-Maul accepted the Florida Way awards for the men's and women's teams respectively. The Florida Way awards are given to an athlete from each Gator team who represents Florida in the highest manner and demonstrates qualities such as honesty, integrity, strong work ethic and compassion.
