Gators’ Distance Corps Heads to Virginia Challenge
Thursday, April 20, 2017 | Track and Field
Florida will race in some of the best distance races in the country this weekend
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Florida's distance corps, which last ran competitively three weeks ago at the Pepsi Florida Relays, travels to the highly-competitive Virginia Challenge. The field will feature some of the best distance and middle-distance fields assembled at a meet this season.
UF's 800 meters duo of Andres Arroyo and Ryan Schnulle, as well as Taylor Tubbs, who will run her first 5,000 meters race of the outdoor season, headlines this weekend's travel squad.
Arroyo already has the No. 5-ranked time in the nation (1:46.42), while Schnulle's season-opener of 1:49.21 ranks 43rd nationally and 26th within the East Region. The two All-Americans will race in the meet's top section, which features three NCAA Indoor Championships finalists and four of the nation's top 20 outdoor half-milers.
Tubbs, an NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier in the 5,000 meters last year, opened her outdoor campaign with a 1,500 meters personal best of 4:20.61 at Pepsi Florida Relays. That time ranks tied for 17th in the East Region.
Action gets underway at 7:55 p.m. ET Friday (April 21) and 9:00 a.m. Saturday (April 22). All four Gators running Friday night will do so during the ACC Network + broadcast, which can be seen via Watch ESPN.
