This is the second time in three weeks Bates and Holloway earned their respective awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida jumper KeAndre Bates, as well as hurdler, jumper, and sprinter Grant Holloway earned SEC weekly honors for the second time in three weeks, the conference office announced Tuesday (May 2) afternoon.
Bates was named SEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week following his NCAA-leading mark in the triple jump (16.70 meters / 54 feet, 9.5 inches) at last Friday's (April 28) Tom Jones Memorial. The wind-legal mark extended his season-long run of outstanding performances.
With a season-best long jump mark of 8.13 meters (26 feet, 8.25 inches) already on the books, Bates became the fifth Division I man since 2002 to triple jump at least 16.70 meters and long jump at least 8.10 meters prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Three of the other four to accomplish the feat are Gator Greats Marquis Dendy (2015), Will Claye (2011), and Christian Taylor (2010), while the other is LSU's Walter Davis (2002).
Moreover, with Bates' mark this past Saturday the Gators boast five men's triple jumpers with wind-legal collegiate personal records of at least 16.70 meters—all of whom have posted such a jump since 2010. All other Division I schools only combine for seven during that span.
Holloway earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors with yet another impressive display of versatility.
The Chesapeake, Va. native won the 110-meter hurdles with the second-fastest wind-legal time in the nation (13.46) and assisted UF's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams in their respective victories.
Some interesting nuggets on Holloway's performance:
The Gators return to action next Thursday at the SEC Outdoor Championships, which will take place in Columbia, South Carolina from May 11-13.
