SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Florida women's golf team competed in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday and finished the day in 12th place at 46-over (622). The Gators carded a 14-over (302) in the second round, improving by 18 strokes on Friday's first round.
Due to Saturday's cancelled round, the stroke-play portion of the tournament was shortened from 72 holes to 54 holes. The top-eight teams following Monday's third round will advance to the match play portion of the championship.
Florida is just three shots off the eight-team cut line. Currently, Miami sits in eighth place at 43-over (619).
UF was one of the first teams to tee off this morning. When the Gators finished their round, they sat in 19th place, but moved up seven spots as other teams finished their rounds.
Maria Torres had a solid day for Florida, carding a one-over (73) on Sunday. The senior sits in a tie for 32rd place at 10-over (154).
Taylor Tomlinson and Sam Wagner both carded a three-over (75), the second best score for the Gators. Wagner, who was a late substitute for an ill Marta Perez, improved 17 stokes on her opening round score.
Golf Channel coverage will begin on Monday with pregame coverage starting at 4 p.m. (ET), followed by live coverage at 5 p.m. (ET).
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On the Gators' second round…
"It was great to improve and make a little bit of a move today. I think everyone had mixed feelings because we know we have more in us. The great news is we have another day to prove that."
On Torres' solid second round…
"A big day for Maria, happy to see her bounce back."
On Wagner's play today…
"I'm really proud of Sam and the resiliency she showed after Friday. We have asked a lot of her this week, coming in last minute, but we all knew she could rise to the occasion and she did today."
On tomorrow's final stroke play round…
"Tomorrow is going to be very exciting. It's the opportunity you hope to have and we want to make the most of it."
