SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Gators women's golf team fell to Arizona State in the quarterfinal round of the match play at the NCAA Championship on Tuesday. At the turn onto the front nine, the Gators were down in all five matches, but they continued to fight for the rest of the round.
Taylor Tomlinson was two-down through 10 holes, she went on to birdie the sixth hole to square the match. Kelly Grassel was three-down through 8 holes and birdied the next two holes to go one-down.
Karolina Vlckova faced off against NCAA Individual Champion Monica Vaughn. Vlckova was two-down heading to seventh hole, she pared the hole to extend the match. Vaughn then pared the next hole to stay two-up, winning the third point for Arizona State and clinching their win over Florida.
The Gators conclude the season with six team title and will return two members of the national championship lineup for the 2017-18 season. Seniors Kelly Grassel, Maria Torres and Karolina Vlckova all finished up great careers for the Orange and Blue that included an SEC Title this year.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On today's match play against Arizona State…
"Arizona State is a fantastic team with really talented players. I wish we would have played a little better today. I thought we made it too easy on them. You could play great against a team like ASU and still lose. But to give so many away today is the thing that hurts the most. But credit to them, they got it done."
On the Gators' season…
"We had a great year. You never want it to end, but we have a lot to be proud of and no one should be hanging their heads."
On the three seniors…
"We will miss our three seniors. The mark that they have left on this program is more than any of us could have imagined. They have been such great ambassadors for Florida Women's Golf and we can't thank them enough."
