Wednesday, May 31, 2017 | Baseball
Alex Faedo is one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate baseball player, USA Baseball announced on Wednesday.
In 2016, right-hander Logan Shore was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Shore was a second round pick by the Oakland A's following last season.
Faedo, an All-SEC Second Team selection, has a 7-2 record this season with a 2.80 earned run average. He was twice named the SEC Pitcher of the Year in 2017, following shutout performances against Miami and South Carolina.
In his career, Faedo has .813 win percentage (26-6 record), the highest win percentage in school history among pitchers with at least 20 decisions. He currently sits in third place in the UF record book with 305 career strikeouts.
The Gators (42-16), who earned the No. 3 national seed for the 2017 NCAA Baseball Tournament, will open regional play against fourth-seeded Marist at McKethan Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
Fan voting will once again be part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2017. This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com – the online home of the award, powered by MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM).
Finalists for the 2017 Golden Spikes Award will be announced on Wednesday, June 14.
