
Fertel Competes for United States at 2017 Maccabiah Games

Sophomore Gator Wins Four Gold Medals, One Silver
NETANYA, Israel – Women's swimmer Kelly Fertel competed in the 2017 Maccabiah Games this week, representing the United States. Fertel took home seven pieces of hardware, earning four individual gold medals and one individual silver, as well as one gold and one silver from relays.
The rising sophomore placed in the top eight in eight events over the course of four days: the 100m Free, 400m Free, 200m IM, 400m IM, 200m Back, 4x100m FR and 4x200m FR.
Fertel's first medal finish came on Sunday, July 9, where she earned a silver in the 200m Backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:17.62. She also raced in the 100m Freestyle on Sunday, placing fifth in the final with a time of 57.31.
The Miami, Fla. native won her first gold medal on Monday, finishing in the top spot in the 400m Individual Medley. Her time of 4:45.54 broke the Maccabiah Games record. Fertel made the final after posting a time of 4:47.14 in the preliminary round.
Fertel raced in the 400m Free on Tuesday, picking up her second gold medal and third total for the week. She won the final with a time of 4:18.19, beating the rest of the field by four seconds. She finished fourth in the preliminary round with a time of 4:27.40 to earn her spot in the final.
She then closed out her week on Wednesday, earning her third and fourth individual gold medals of the week in the 200m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle. She beat the 200IM field by over a second, posting a time of 2:15.03. In the 800m Free race, Fertel finished with a time of 8:57.21 to collect her fifth individual medal of the week.
Fertel also won a gold medal with the 4x200m Freestyle Relay and finished the 4x100m Freestyle Relay in second, earning another silver medal.
