Junior Running Back One of 61 Named to National List
2017 Doak Walker Award Watch List
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior running back Jordan Scarlett earned his first preseason nod after he was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, as SMU announced Thursday.
Scarlett, a social and behavioral sciences major, earned his place on the watch list after leading the Gators' rushing offense with 889 yards and six touchdowns on 179 carries. With his 889 yards, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native became the first freshman or sophomore to garner that high a number since the 1995 season.
The rising junior recorded three 100-plus yard games last season, including a career-high 134 yards against South Carolina. He was credited with 48 missed tackles last season, putting him atop the SEC and 16th nationally in that category. Scarlett eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for his career in the Outback Bowl last season, putting up 94 yards against Iowa.
Scarlett is one of 61 running backs named to the national list that honors the nation's top college running back. The award, which will name its 28th recipient in 2017, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists on November 15. Three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced November 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 26 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2017 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 7 on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet is scheduled for February 16, 2018 in Dallas.
